Enola Holmes Movie Review: A Refreshing and Spirited Take on the Holmes Mythology

Millie Bobby Brown successfully sheds her telekinetic persona from Hawkins to step into Victorian London as the sharp-witted, rebellious younger sister of the world is most famous detective in the mystery adventure, Enola Holmes. Directed by Harry Bradbeer, this film brings a delightful, feminist-forward perspective to the classic detective lore, proving that the Holmes family has more than one genius in its ranks.

The Storyline: A Quest for Identity and Independence

The narrative begins on the sixteenth birthday of Enola Holmes, a day that should be celebratory but instead starts with a shock. Her eccentric, free-spirited mother, Eudoria, has vanished without a trace, leaving behind a collection of odd gifts and no clear explanation. Suddenly, Enola finds herself under the guardianship of her older brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock. While Sherlock is merely curious about the situation, Mycroft is determined to send his wild younger sister to a strict finishing school to turn her into a proper, marriageable lady.

Refusing to submit to a life of corsets and conformity, Enola decodes a series of clues left by her mother and escapes to London. Henry Cavill offers a softer, more empathetic portrayal of Sherlock Holmes than audiences are accustomed to seeing. His chemistry with Millie Bobby Brown is warm and grounded, providing a nice contrast to Sam Claflin is rigid, antagonistic portrayal of Mycroft. Helena Bonham Carter, though appearing in limited scenes, leaves a strong impression as the unconventional matriarch of the family.

The action sequences are well-choreographed, showcasing Enola is self-defence skills without feeling overly stylized. It is a highly entertaining film that appeals to both young adults and mature audiences alike, successfully establishing a brand-new franchise hero.
